INCIDENT:  SNOW EMERGENCY CANCELLED  

OCCURRED: February 3, 2015   4:30 pm

LOCATION: Borough of Bergenfield

The snow emergency issued on February 1, 2015 has been cancelled. As reported by Police Operations and after consultation with the Department of Public Works, the area roadways are sufficiently cleared for traffic flow and there no major incidents to report.

Residents and snow removal contractors are reminded to refrain from throwing snow onto the roadways as it causes a traffic hazard on roadways previously cleared and is a violation of Borough Ordinance -Chapter 273.

The owner or tenant of lands abutting or bordering on paved sidewalks of the streets, avenues, highways and public places shall remove all snow and ice from the same within 24 hours after the snow and ice shall have ceased to fall or form.
In the event of the refusal or neglect of an owner or occupant of land to comply with the provisions of this article, the Street Commissioner or other official having charge of the streets may cause the snow or ice to be removed from the sidewalks or walkways. The cost of removal, as ascertained by the Council, shall be certified to the Tax Assessor and shall be added to and form a part of the taxes next to be levied and assessed upon the land and shall be a lien upon the land until paid.

No person, firm or corporation shall cast or throw snow or ice onto a public street or thoroughfare.
For violation of any provision of this article, the penalties set forth in Chapter 1, Article II, General Penalty, shall apply.

Snow Emergency Issued for February 1, 2015 Starting at 7:00 PM

OCCURRED:   Sunday February 1, 2015, beginning at 7:00 PM (1900 hours)

LOCATION:   Borough of Bergenfield

            ALERT: SNOW EMERGENCY ISSUED 
The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning from 7:00 PM on Sunday, February 1, through Monday at 6:00 PM, on February 2. 

LOCATIONS... THE NEW YORK CITY AND NEW JERSEY METROPOLITAN AREAS.HAZARD TYPES... SNOW... SLEET AND FREEZING RAIN. ACCUMULATIONS... SNOW ACCUMULATION OF 4 TO 8 INCHES... ALONG WITH AROUND ONE QUARTER OF AN INCH OF ICE.WINDS... NORTHEAST 15 TO 25 MPH WITH GUSTS UP TO 30 MPH. TEMPERATURES... IN THE UPPER 20S.VISIBILITIES... ONE QUARTER MILE OR LESS AT TIMES.* SNOWFALL RATES... OCCASIONALLY 1 TO 2 INCHES PER HOUR LATE SUNDAY NIGHT INTO EARLY MONDAY MORNING.* IMPACTS... Based on the storm prediction, the Borough of Bergenfield will have a SNOW EMERGENCY IN EFFECT on Sunday, February 1, 2015, beginning at 7:00 PM (1900 hours) and it will remain in effect until further notice.

NO OVERNIGHT PARKING WILL BE AUTHORIZED while the SNOW EMERGENCY is in effect. 

The Bergenfield Police will enforce the no parking ban under the snow emergency under section D of Ordinance 299-12. This states that the snow emergency remains in effect until the streets have been plowed sufficiently and to the extent that parking will not interfere with the normal flow of traffic.

Department of Public Works personnel are prepared for the storm and will handle salting and plowing of the roadways. Officers will have the authority to tow any vehicle that is abandoned and interfering with traffic flow or the clearing of snow from the roadways.

**The snow emergency will remain in effect until further notice which shall include until after the snow has ceased or until the streets have been plowed sufficiently and to the extent that parking will not interfere with the normal flow of traffic.



Borough Ordinance 299-12. Snow emergency.
A. A snow emergency shall exist whenever snow has fallen and the accumulation is such that it covers the street or highway. In addition to this, when weather conditions cause a state or condition of the street that is hazardous or dangerous to vehicular or pedestrian traffic even if the entire street or highway is not covered by snow shall constitute a snow emergency when declared by the Chief of Police, or in his absence, the ranking police officer in charge.
B. Definition: As used in this section, the following terms shall have the meanings indicated:
SNOW: Any precipitation depositing any accumulation and shall be deemed to include snow, sleet, and hail, ice, freezing rain or any combination thereof.
SNOW TIRES: Tires with or without studs and having treads designed for use in the snow which tread shall be of sufficient depth to accomplish the purpose for which the tire was designed.
C. Snow emergency declared. Upon the occurrence of a snow emergency as hereinabove defined, the Chief of Police, or in his absence, the ranking police officer shall have the authority to declare such an emergency. Within one hour after such a declaration, no person shall cause, permit, allow or suffer any vehicle owned or driven by him to become stalled or immobile on any portion of any street in the Borough of Bergenfield because of the failure of the vehicle to be equipped with snow tires or chains. The Chief of Police or the ranking officer shall immediately inform the public of said snow emergency by issuing a press release to the local and metropolitan radio, television and news services.
D. Snow emergency routes. All streets of the Borough of Bergenfield are snow emergency routes upon which no parking shall be allowed during a snow emergency, and such parking prohibition, shall remain in effect until after the snow has ceased or until the streets have been plowed sufficiently and to the extent that parking will not interfere with the normal flow of traffic or until otherwise terminated by the Chief of Police, or in his absence, the ranking officer, in the same manner as declared in above.

OCCURRED:   Monday January 26, 2015, beginning at 0700 hours

LOCATION:   Borough of Bergenfield

ALERT: SNOW EMERGENCY ISSUED 

The National Weather Service has issued a Blizzard Warning from 1:00 PM Monday, January 26 through Tuesday Midnight, January 27.

SNOW ACCUMULATION OF 20 TO 30 INCHES... WITH LOCALLY HIGHER AMOUNTS POSSIBLE. SNOWFALL RATES OF 2 TO 4 INCHES PER HOUR EXPECTED LATE MONDAY NIGHT INTO TUESDAY MORNING. WINDS... NORTH 30 TO 40 MPH WITH GUSTS 55 TO 65 MPH... STRONGEST ACROSS EASTERN LONG ISLAND.

Hazardous conditions will exist due to visibility and snow/ice covered roads.
