Child Car Seat Installation/Check
On Saturday, May 17, 2014 from 9am to 1pm the Bergenfield Police Department along with the Dumont Police Department will be conducting a free child car seat inspection and installation checkpoint. All members of the public are invited to attend. The event will be held in the TD Bank parking lot located at 126 N. Washington Ave. Bergenfield, NJ in the outer most drive-up lane. Refreshments will be served.

Drug Take-Back Bergenfield Nets 115 pounds
National Take-Back Day was a success again in Bergenfield.
Coordinated with the Drug Enforcement Agency along with
local, county and state police agencies, the program aims to
provide a safe, convenient, and responsible means of
disposing of prescription drugs, while also educating the
general public about the potential for abuse of medications.
Residents of Bergenfield turned in 115 pounds of unused,
expired or unwanted medicines to the police department's
disposal boxes on Saturday, April 26, between 10 am and
2 pm. Thank you to all who took part and contributed to the
safe disposals and made 115 pounds of prescription medicine
no longer available for abuse.

Suicidal Subject Reported April 24
On Thursday, April 24, 2014, at 12:12 p.m., members of the
Bergenfield Police Department responded to the area of Hunt Walk, an apartment
complex, for a report of a possible suicidal male. Information received indicated the male might
be located within his garage.
Based on the information provided and gathered involving a firearm, the department handled the incident as a barricaded subject. The Bergen County SWAT Team was notified and responded to the scene along with the County Crisis Negotiation Team.
Traffic in the immediate area of the incident was detoured during the incident. The residents in the area were evacuated from their homes as a safety measure.
The SWAT Team entered the garage and determined the victim was deceased and the area was safe.
The scene has been secured and the matter is currently under investigation. Further information will be provided as it becomes available.
Units that assisted during this incident were the Bergen County SWAT Team, Bomb Squad, Crisis Negotiators, Dumont, New Milford, Tenafly, Teaneck and Englewood police departments and the Bergenfield Volunteer Ambulance Corps.

Phase 2 of PSE&G Project on S. Washington Ave
PSE&G will be conducting Phase 2 of their project on S. Washington Ave. and New Bridge Rd. The project is scheduled to begin on Monday, April 28, 2014 and last to approximately Wednesday, May 21, 2014, based on weather and work conditions.
All businesses in the area will be open during the construction. The roadway is subject to lane closures and changes based on safety. PSE&G representatives have reported that this phase of the project will be much less intrusive than the last phase. Officers will be on scene daily to direct traffic and ensure all motorists, pedestrians and workers are safe. Attached below is the notification sent to businesses in the area from PSE&G representatives.

Lightning Detection System installed and activated
A lightning detection system has been installed and is active within the borough as of April 15, 2014. The sensor locations have been placed at the following locations:
Coopers Pond, Veterans Memorial field, PAL field, Melrose Ave-Little League field, Applegate Park-Hickory Ave, Hoover School, Bergenfield High School, Roy W. Brown Middle School. Other locations are pending. The detection system is highly reliable and provides a strobe light warning as well as an audible (horn) warning. If a warning is activated, all persons should seek immediate shelter to protect themselves and minimize any risk of a lightning strike to themselves or others. More information will be released on this system in the near future. All residents are reminded that the system is active and they should heed any strobe or audible warning as an actual lightning detection.

April is Distracted Driver Month
New Jersey's first statewide Distracted Driving Enforcement
Crackdown began Tuesday, April 1 and runs through Monday, April 21. The Bergenfield Police Department will be participating in this campaign in an effort to educate the motoring public. During the month, the Traffic Bureau will be conducting an educational enforcement detail geared towards this campaign as well as pedestrian safety. The Police Department is urging motorists to avoid collisions and don't drive distracted.
