     Bergenfield Police Communications received a 911 transfer call from Bergen County Communications reporting a motor vehicle crash at New Bridge Road and South Prospect Avenue involving a tractor trailer and multiple vehicles.

    The crash investigation by the officers has found that the 53 foot tractor trailer, registered to JB Hunt, was traveling eastbound on New Bridge Road approaching the intersection of South Prospect Avenue when it struck the rear of a vehicle waiting in the left turn lane on New Bridge Road. The impact sent that vehicle into another vehicle also waiting to turn left onto South Prospect Avenue. The tractor trailer then skidded into the westbound lanes of New Bridge Road where it made contact with four other westbound vehicles, including one vehicle, a Smart Car, which nearly went under the trailer but was stopped by the landing legs of the truck’s trailer. A total of seven vehicles were involved in this crash.

   A total of five persons were injured and transported to local hospitals. The injured were the drivers of five of the involved vehicles, all females, ages 18, 59, 49, 46, and 56. The driver of the truck was not injured.

Bergenfield Police were assisted at the scene by both Teaneck and New Milford Police departments for traffic diversion in the area. In addition, Bergenfield Volunteer Ambulance personnel received assistance from Teaneck Volunteer Ambulance with transportation of injured persons to Holy Name Medical Center and Hackensack University Medical Center. The Bergenfield Fire Department was on scene based on a vehicle fluid and fuel spill in roadway.

   The crash investigation report is still being completed. Traffic summons are pending against the operator of the tractor trailer.
